In a significant blow to the al Shabaab terrorist group, a joint operation conducted by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the Somalia National Army (SNA) has led to the death of at least 40 terrorists. The offensive targeted a terrorist hideout and a weapons depot in Welmaro, a town located 40 kilometers from Afmadow in Somalia's Lower Jubba region. Supported by airstrikes from international partners, the SNA forces were able to successfully destroy the hideout and depot.
The operation marks another step in the intensified efforts to eradicate al Shabaab. The SNA and its international partners have been actively engaging the group in recent months, demonstrating their determination to defeat the terrorist organization. The Ministry of Defense in Somalia confirmed the attack, stating that several high-ranking leaders were among those killed in the offensive.
During the operation, the KDF troops, operating under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia, made significant discoveries. They captured a minibus containing 28 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that had already been assembled, along with RPGs and AK47s. Additionally, they recovered approximately Ksh 200,000 in Kenyan shillings. The IEDs were intended for use in Boni, Ijara, and Garissa, according to reliable sources.
Intelligence sources had identified a compound in Welmaro as an IED assembly location, leading to its subsequent destruction. The successful raid on the compound was carried out by the KDF troops and the SNA special forces. As a result, the troops are now advancing towards Xagar (Hagar) town in the Lower Juba region.
Capturing Xagar would provide a strategic advantage to the forces, as it would enable them to launch an attack on Buale, the official capital of Jubaland state. Buale has been under al Shabaab control for more than 15 years and serves as the regional capital of Middle Juba, the only region entirely controlled by the terrorist group.
Given the ongoing operations against al Shabaab in various parts of Somalia, it is expected that attacks in the border region will continue. Many terrorists have sought refuge along the Kenya-Somalia border, using it as a launching point for their attacks. These attacks have resulted in numerous casualties and injuries, with the terrorists employing firearms and explosives.
The presence of Kenyan troops in Somalia is part of the African Union Transition Mission, aimed at supporting efforts to combat the al Shabaab terror group. The Kenyan forces have been in Somalia since October 2011, contributing to regional stability and security.
The recent offensive against al Shabaab not only signifies a significant setback for the terrorist organization but also highlights the determination of the SNA and its partners to rid Somalia of this threat.
